Jinze Ancient Town lies in the southwestern part of Qingpu District, Shanghai, near the borders of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Like many towns in the Jiangnan region, it grew around its waterways, bridges, and narrow streets. Its history dates back to the Song dynasty, and several old bridges from different periods remain. Canals wind between the lanes, houses line the water, and everyday life continues within this historic setting.
I arrived in Jinze in the late afternoon. Compared with Luxu, which I had visited earlier, Jinze felt a little more commercial. The streets were tidier, and the shops looked more polished. Yet, deeper in the lanes, I still came across the people who live here: someone returning from the market, children playing in a courtyard, and a cat sleeping soundly on an old sofa—until my camera disturbed its nap. These small, ordinary moments gave the town a comfortable, unhurried, and lived-in feeling.
